Don’t buy this saw!! I just spent three hours cutting down two twenty foot trees. The chain tension knob is made out of plastic and stripped out before I had dropped the first tree. The chain popped off the bar five times which damaged the chain and housing. I had to dismantle the tension housing and turn the inside gears by hand to get the chain tightened. After a few cuts the chain loosens up again. This thing is dangerous and should be recalled!!

I owned a Ryobi unit which used a reciprocating saw trimmer. It got jammed and the gears stripped. Can’t get these any more. This unit works pretty well and the chain saw idea is pretty good. Mine had the chain tensioned too tight for my Ryobi and I had a tough time keeping the unit running without stalling the motor. After loosening the chain tension it worked much better. The strap is kind of useless and I can tell you your arms will get tired so take your time. Since you are always looking up here are some important safety tips: DON’T WORK ALONE, USE TIGHTLY SEALED SAFETY GOGGLES, BE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD FOOTING AND A CLEAR PATH TO MOVE QUICKLY IF THINGS START GOING WRONG. When you store the unit put in in a tray of some type since the chain cutting oil leaks when not in use. Very happy so far.

I have owned this chain saw for about 6 months. I used it occaionally around the yard cutting fallen branches etc. I recently cut a larger oak limb that had fallen and while doing so it started making a dull grinding noise and slipping. After awhile the chain would not turn at all. I opened it up to see what was wrong and discovered all the teeth had been sheared off of a large ring gear. A smaller metal gear rotates in around this ring gear and this ring gear was made of plastic #*%!*@. I had thought maybe a clutch went bad, but after examining the mechanics there appeared to be no clutch. It seems that if you work it hard (relative term here) the gears teeth strip off rendering the chain saw useless.I found the ring gear online for a bit over $6 US and ordered a few(3 of them) 34118154G. The part # for the 16″ appears to be the same as the 14″, So I guess Homelite just uses a bigger bar. I hope this is all that went bad.In summary, Do not use this for cutting oak firewood or
