I have had this saw for over a year and it still has plenty of power and cuts well. Great price and the saw looks cool. You might as well look good while you are working. It has never failed to start afrer a few cranks and runs well after it gets warmed up. Approved by YODA.

The product was advertised as new, but when I received it the box was marked “Recon” all over it. Maybe their sly way of trying to downplay the fact that the chainsaw is not a new one, but rather a “reconditioned” one? The chainsaw has nicks, scratches, and wear marks all over it. They couldn’t even spring for a new chain inside the box—-even it says “Factory Service Center Recon Chain”. What a ripoff!

I’ll keep the chainsaw and try it out. But if it doesn’t perform as advertised, this case is going straight to the BBB (Better Business Bureau) as I’ve seen this complaint of “paying for new, but receiving used” from other reviewers on this product.

Only buy this chain saw if you have little use for one. It is lite duty all the way.I bought this saw to cut up some large branches from a tree. It is barely good enough for this job. The saw is very hard to start. As reported by several others the chain falls off regularly. For some reason my chain needs to be replaced and I am not yet done with this small job. I have no idea why this would be but it does not cut hardly at all and smokes the wood rather than cut it.I just hope that a new chain will work long enough to finish the job. All that being said I must in fairness say that I bought this saw as “re-conditioned into like new condition”.Perhaps what I really got was re-conditioned into used condition. This may be why the chain wore out so fast.

I bought this saw in 2005 for felling three small trees (18″ diameter) I would start the saw every 6 month and used fuel stabilizer when storing for long periods, in short this saw was babied. After major storm in 2010 the saw worked okay initially, but eventually became very difficult to start. It turned out that the engine had not enough compression to start. This saw just about broke me mentally and physically, exerting huge energy trying to start it. My advise is stay away from this saw, spend the extra $ for something you can rely on. If you gave me a new one for free I would not take it. You can not put a price on aggravation and frustration.

Received this saw very quickly, and is exactly what I had hoped it would be. No problems, or surprises. Saw has been preforming very well in cleaning up downed trees on my property, after another destructive winter. Anyone who can follow instructions should get plenty of use with this saw.

The Poulan 4018 is great saw in general. I bought mine for $100. The Poulan 4018 has a strong engine, starts easy, balanced fairly well, cuts great. The only drawback is in order for the saw to be reliable (and it will be) you need to keep up on the maintenance constantly. There needs to be bar-chain oil in the saw at all times. You will quickly stretch your chain and ruin your bar if you cut to long with no oil. Tap it off each time you re-fill the gas. Keep your chains sharp (if you see smoke when cutting your chain is dull or you are out of oil). Check the chain adjustment each time you refuel as well. Lubricate the pull-starter pully wheel when it starts to feel tight. Also it is best if you learn how to adjust a 2 cycle engine. (You will need a special driver to adjust the mixture screws) That way you can keep this saw running great for a long time.
All saws require maintenance but If you want a saw with less maintenance you will be spending more money then what you would spend on a Poulan 4018.

    I HATE this chainsaw.

Poor design, crappy plastic breaks on it. I used it for a month and then the clutch went out on it. Like other raters, my chain won’t move now so I have to go out and buy another chain saw.

WORST MONEY I EVER SPENT ON SOMETHING.

I ended up spending twice as much on this Makita, but it was completely worth it.

I just bought this saw, it started and ran fine. I took it the wood pile out back to try it out; it cut the smaller pieces alright but when I introduced it to a larger cut of wood (14″ dia. pine), it just didn’t have the power to go through. It bogged down and did not perform at all.

I then proceeded to drain the oil and gas and take it back as it is not suitable for my needs.

For light use, I think this saw would probably suffice. For anything above light use, you may consider investing the money in a more substantial saw……which coinicidently is what I’m going to have to do.

I bought this chainsaw at Home Depot in 2006 on a black Friday sale for $100. After using it for ten minutes, the starter mechanism crapped out. Sometimes it helps to knock on it but most of the time I have to take that part apart to make it usable anymore. After about an hour of use the carburetor died. A plug inside the carb came out and it could not be fixed. I ordered a brand new carburetor for it but it still does not run. STAY AWAY from this tool!

I would give the saw an overall B- rating. The positve: It starts fairly easily if starting steps followed properly — read them, follow them. It is light enough for the average home user. The engine seems pretty solid and I cut 1 cord of wood with the saw (for cutting wood, this saw is too small, but did actually do the task). The negative: the plastic toolless blade adjuster works ok, but seems weak and will break any minute. It worked sorta ok for me, but not great. The oiler didn’t work so good after a few hours of use and should be cleaned often.

Overall the saw would be good for a home user that needs to cut 4 inch limbs and the occasional 6-10 tree. Follow instructions for starting and keep the chain well oiled, even if the oiler gets gunked up.

I liked this saw great until it locked up and I couldn’t move the chain. Thinking a piece of wood was stuck I took off the clutch cover never to get it back on again. I used this saw probably 10 hours and now it is useless.
Very bad design, I would not recommend this saw at 1/2 the price.

  11. comment  Felton Says:

This thing eats wood. I didn’t have any of the start up problems lots of other people have, one thing though is youve really got to watch the oil reservoir- it might be a little undersized and empties quickly but no big deal just refill.

I have two of these (one for 2 yrs, one for about 16 months). One had issues after about 9 months and Poulan replaced it for me (took a little longer than I’d like, but I got a new one, and a new chain and case, so I was happy). I’ve cut about 20 or so cords of wood with them and rotate between about 5 or 6 chains (so I don’t have to sharpen them out in the field) and am very happy with them. There’s probably better brands out there, but for the money, this can’t be beat.

I think this must be one of those items that truly is a YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary) product. Almost equal numbers of 1 star & 5 star reviews. My personal experience has been a mix between both extremes. I have used it for all kinds of cutting around my yard and neighborhood (our neighborhood has lots of pear trees, with weak wood & branches that get damaged during thunderstorms in summer & snow/ice, not that we get much snow & ice, in winter). It has cut everything I have thrown at it, but keep in mind that I have not done anything super-heavy-duty, and I agree with those who say if you need a heavy-duty saw to spend your money wisely and buy a Stihl or something. But for my purposes, which is a handful of times a year, it has been great.

Not perfect, as there have been a few frustrations. Chain does tend to come off easily – and it took me a while to figure out the correct tightness (so that it would neither bind or fall off). But once I figured that out (trial & error, though honestly, the easy adjust thing makes it so there is only so much you can tweak in adjusting), it has been very solid, with minimal problems. Still does have to be adjusted occasionally, but with practice it is really pretty easy, even for a novice like me.

Starting can be a real pain in the butt, but that is something that also has gotten easier over time (figuring how much to prime & pull and when to go to 1/2 choke, etc). All in all, I recommend this product – not perfect, but well worth it, for me. But be aware going in, there are some real frustrations you may experience, so don’t say you weren’t warned :-)
